The Oly Blog: What's it all about?
The Oly Blog - What's it all about?
Blogging. How many times must it be now where I start a new blog with good intention and end up forgetting about it or losing interest.
This time however, its different.....I hope.
I have recently converted to the Olympus 4/3 system after using a whole host of cameras for around 7 years for wildlife photography.
Surely by now I should have found a system I was happy with. Fuji seemed like the answer with its outstanding image quality and excellent portability. However the Fuji system, while excellent, just didn't quite do it for me on the autofocus speed/accuracy front. I know many a user who are more than happy with being a Fuji owner, and I still own an X100, but for wildlife it just didn't quite cut it for me.
So having debated and debated with myself about what I wanted to try next I came to the following decisions:
1. DSLR. Nikon D7200 with the Nikon 300mm PF and 1.4x converter or 200-500mm lens.
2. Micro 4/3 Olympus. Olympus OM-D EM-1 mk2 with 300mm F4 lens and 1.4x converter.
So why did Olympus win? Well like the Fuji its a system that excites me. While the Nikon DSLR system is truly excellent it never really gave me that buzz. It all felt very safe and while safety and reliability in knowing what you're using are important it didn't feel like much a challenge.
The Olympus system sure poses plenty of challenges. Will the autofocus be fast enough? Low light performance at higher iso? Will the depth of the image be enough for me coming from APSC sensor cameras?
So that's why I've started this blog. I am hoping to use it to share my discoveries as I enter the unknown with the Olympus system. It is an interesting concept but will the reality be just as exciting?
I look forward to the feedback of readers of this blog on the images I post. Perhaps with tips on how to get the best out of the Olympus system for wildlife or views on what makes the images good or bad.
Thanks for reading.
